Pearl Harbor
Oahu - copyright hawaii holiday travel
On 7th December 1941, more than 350 Japanese fighter planes and submarines attacked the US fleet stationed at Pearl Harbor. Over one thousand of the Americans who died that day were military band personnel aboard the USS Arizona. One of six ships to be sunk, (12 other ships were hit and 347 planes destroyed), a memorial was erected over the sunken wreck of USS Arizona in 1962 to commemorate the devastating events that day. The Arizona War memorial is the most visited attraction in Hawaii with an estimated 3,000 visitors each day. Other attractions around Pearl Harbor include the Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park and the berthed 887-foot Battleship Missouri on which the Japanese signed documents to end the war.
